Travel Log: Richmond

Virginia like heaven for American history buffs

Saturday night in Richmond will provide a glimpse of what the future holds for the Chase as the 12-driver field is set.

But Richmond is better at honoring its history, as is the Virginia Commonwealth. The nation won its freedom and signed it into law there, and a great number of its fallen veterans have been laid to rest there, too.

Virginia isn't just about the past and fighting for freedom. But that part still lives and will do so forever.

Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center -- In historic Williamsburg, visitors can have a first-hand experience of the nation's earliest days of freedom -- and what it took to earn that. History galleries and museums are combined with on-site adventures that allow guests to relive moments such as America's first permanent English settlement and the Revolutionary War.

Fans' Voice

icehandluke -- If you are a history buff we have lots of rich Civil War history, but our city leadership hides it because they don't want to make our past very public. They hope it will just go away. I will not get into why.

Our state capital in downtown Richmond has a great free tour to take if you have the time. It's the oldest capital building in the USA and has a very rich history that spans Thomas Jefferson as the man that designed and built it, General Lee that took the commission of the military from our own President Jefferson Davis. It has what was built to be the tomb of Washington but was never used as a tomb for our first president. We host Monument Avenue where you can see larger-than-life monuments to all our Civil War leaders. Just east of us is Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, where we fought and won the Revolution in the late 1700s.

About an hour to the west of the city we have the home of Thomas Jefferson, Monticello -- it's a great tour to take with your family and is filled with American history.

Just west of downtown is the Fan District where you can find some of the best Southern food in America. Send me an IM and I will e-mail you a list of all our great places to eat and drink that are family friendly.

We have a great night life in the Shockoe Bottom in downtown Richmond.

I don't think you can find a city in the U.S. with a richer history than the old Capital of the South, my home, Richmond, Va.
